Textbooks, for example, usually use directive language like "Follow these steps" or "Use this formula," which subtly conveys to students that their job is to follow instructions rather than exercise critical or creative thought. As I think back on my time as a student, I see how this method might lower interest and promote the idea that mathematics is a strict, inflexible subject that is detached from real-world application.
Given the changing role in education, the arguments for and against utilizing textbooks in the classroom are very different but important to analyze. Textbooks offer a standardized and regulated curriculum that might be useful for covering important learning objectives and guaranteeing consistency. However, as Wagner and Herbel-Eisenmann point out, the conventional textbook design frequently restricts students' ability to interact profoundly with mathematical ideas or to perceive themselves as producers of mathematical knowledge. In order to establish a more student-centered learning environment, I, as a teacher candidate, am becoming more and more interested in methods that go beyond reliance on textbooks. These methods include rich problems and inquiry-based activities.
