Czikszentmihalyi, Liljedahl and 'flow' in the Math Classroom

Csikszentmihalyi (2004) sees flow as a mental state where individuals feel totally concentrated on a task. This idea of flow now results in a feeling of deep fulfillment. One important lesson I learned from his TED Talk is the universality of flow through ordinary experiences. I have experienced flow in my everyday life when doing tasks that strike a balance between difficulty and skill, such as working through a challenging math question. These intense moments are naturally fulfilling and demonstrate the transformational power of fully immersing oneself in the process. As a future teacher, it's crucial for me to understand the concept of "flow" in education – the optimal state where challenge and skill are balanced, leading to heightened engagement. Creating classroom conditions that foster flow is essential, as it directly enhances students' motivation and enjoyment of learning.

As a future teacher, I will inspire my students to persevere and explore in-depth through open-ended challenges and relevant real-world examples, fostering their motivation to tackle complex problems across various subjects. Building Thinking Classrooms by Professor Peter Liljedahl supports active participation and teamwork in mathematics, which is in line with the idea of flow. Students are provided opportunities to take intellectual risks and become fully immersed in tackling complex problems that require creative problem-solving strategies. I agree with Liljedahl (2021) that whiteboards and well-designed assignments enhance this learning process.

In order to foster flow and joy in math classes, repetition must give way to real participation. We as teachers should introduce classroom tasks that are rich in complexity and promotes opportunities for diverse solutions. These tasks should be designed to promote both in-depth investigation and collaborative teamwork. By placing students in the role of active inquirers, such tasks stimulate intrinsic motivation through the autonomy of exploration. Furthermore, fostering an environment in the classroom where effort and originality are valued above accuracy enables kids to remain engaged without worrying about failing. I've gathered that Csikszentmihalyi's research says these techniques assist students in discovering happiness and satisfaction in mathematics, which may change how they feel about the topic.
