As a group, we collaborated on a project aiming at combining mathematics with real-world activities to boost student involvement in the class. We started by coming up with ideas for pertinent themes that connect to contemporary societal challenges like economic inequality and climate change. In order to create a collection of interactive lesson plans, each member participated by studying various mathematical topics and implementing them in a math curriculum. Additionally, in order to measure student comprehension and promote critical thinking, we designed assessment tools, that being our activity piece. Our main concern was figuring out how to interactively replicate Owen's "Her" oil painting and use an activity that is engaging. We brainstormed ideas for an interactive presentation as a group since we felt that our arithmetic concept on the Fano Plane could be too complex.
This assignment forced me to think in new ways, and it was a great and learning experience. Integrating our thoughts and making sure every opinion could be heard proved to be one of the largest challenges, and occasionally this resulted in fabulous discussions over the most effective strategy of approach. Teij had a great idea of recreating the Her sculpture and as a team, lets brainstorm ideas following this construction. Overcoming these obstacles, nevertheless, encouraged a spirit of cooperation that turned out to be rewarding. Seeing our original ideas develop into interesting math lesson plans which we thought would actually have an impact in the classroom gave me a lot of delight. The group activity experience expanded my awareness for the value of collaborative learning and improved my grasp of how mathematics may be utilized for real-world problems.
This project provided a reminder to me as a teacher of how important it is to make math interesting and applicable for students. I will be implementing this idea in my own classes. The concept of accommodating various learning styles using digital resources and dynamic tasks really appealed to me since, in my opinion, this may improve student motivation and comprehension. Because of budget constraints, digital technologies like AutoCAD could not be used for this project. But implementing a 3D model, let us still use the fundamental concepts of 'Her' and the Fano Plane and teamwork techniques to get the job done. The idea of developing parallel projects that combine math with other areas will always excite me. Employing statistics in experiments in science will always be a neat opportunity for students to engage in material in a new fashion. As a construction worker, even merging math concepts and word problems on construction applications would be another opportunity here.
